Kai-Uwe Bergmann is a Partner at BIG who brings his expertise to proposals around the globe, including work in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Kai-Uwe heads up BIG’s business development which currently has the office working in 20 different countries as well as overseeing BIG’s Communications. Registered as an architect in the USA (eight states), and Canada (one province), Kai-Uwe most recently contributed to the resiliency plan BIG U to protect 10 miles of Manhattan’s coastline. He compliments his professional work through previous teaching assignments at University of Pennsylvania, University of Florida, IE University in Madrid, and his alma mater the University of Virginia. Kai-Uwe also sits on the Board of the Van Alen Institute, participates on numerous international juries and lectures globally on the works of BIG.
Eng. Khaled Alfouzan is an architect, urban designer and landscape architect. He is an experienced project director with more than 39 years of experience, 24 of which has been in directing and managing major projects handled by the firm including 15 years as a project manager on international funded projects in the Asian subcontinent and West Africa. He directed and inspired the design of the largest urban park in Kuwait with almost 80,000 m² of Green Roofs area which is a prime example of how to meet the challenges of hot and dry climate by using appropriate Green Roof systems.
Deborah Nevins is the president of Deborah Nevins & Associates, the New York-based landscape design firm she founded over 25 years ago. Her firm's work includes the 40-acre Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center and Park in Athens in collaboration with Renzo Piano Building Workshop, and the current expansion of the campus of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, including landscapes for new buildings by Steven Holl Architects. The firm also designed the Pritzker Garden at the Art Institute of Chicago. The firm's extensive residential work includes significant gardens and estates throughout the United States, the Caribbean, and Europe. The work of Deborah Nevins & Associates is noted for exciting visual experiences, a sophisticated use of plants, and a dedication to sustainability. A historian of landscape and architecture, Nevins lectures often and her writing has appeared in numerous books, journals, and periodicals.
Fida Mohammed Alhammadi is a Civil Engineer with a Bachelor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, graduated in 2013 from United Arab Emirates University, and currently she is doing her Master in Engineering Management. She is certified as LEED GREEN ASSOCIATE, CFT, CFME, CCPFme, BREEM ASSOCIATE, and an approved trainer from local and international entities. A new green building rating system named AlSa’fat has just been launched by Dubai Municipality. The purpose of AlSa’fat is to improve the performance of building in Dubai by reducing the consumption of energy, water and materials, improving public health, safety and general welfare and by enhancing the planning, design, construction and operation of buildings to create an excellent city that provides the essence of success and comfort of living.
Kyosuk Lee is taking responsibility on Asian urban & landscape projects at MVRDV. MVRDV was founded in 1993 by Winy Maas, Jacob van Rijs and Nathalie de Vries in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The practice engages globally in providing solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues. A highly collaborative, research-based design method involves clients, stakeholders and experts from a wide range of fields from early on in the creative process. The results are exemplary, outspoken projects, which enable our cities and landscapes to develop towards a better future. One of their recent projects is Seoullo 7017, the transformation of a former inner city highway into a public 983-metre long park gathering 50 families of plants including trees, shrubs and flowers.
Roland Appl, Building Physics Engineer (FH), has been the technical director of a leading Green Roof manufacturer for more than 25 years. He is an author and member of the German working group for Green Roof Guidelines at the Landscape Development and Landscaping Research Society (FLL). He has been president of the International Green Roof Association (IGRA) since 2008 and a speaker at many national and international congresses on the subjects of green roofing and roof use (e.g. World Green Roof Congress in Basel and London, Green Roof for Healthy Cities congresses in Boston, Toronto, Minneapolis and Baltimore, International Green Roof Congress in Nuertingen, Hamburg and Istanbul, Skyrise Greenery Conference in Singapore). He has an outstanding knowledge of Green Roof technology.
Sheikh Soud Al Thani joined ASTAD in 2011 as Senior Engineer in the sustainability unit and has since progressed to Sustainability Manager. He oversees all of ASTAD’s projects and manages the sustainability team, sets the standards and follows through with the delivery. Sheikh Soud holds a Master’s Degree from Oxford in Energy Efficient and Sustainable Buildings. Sustainability is one of ASTAD’s top priorities and Sheikh Soud ensures that the projects adhere to the highest international standards.
Rudi Scheuermann studied architecture at the Technical University of Karlsruhe, Germany, and completed a post graduate research degree on tensile structures at the University of Bath, UK. After working for architects, developers, contractors and engineers in Germany, the Netherlands, UK and the United States, Rudi joined Arup Facade Engineering in London, UK. He was then responsible for setting up a team for architectural and facade engineering in Germany and became European and later Global Leader of the Building Envelope Design Team. Rudi’s focus is facade engineering with the aim to enhance sustainability for all kinds of buildings and in particular for tall buildings. His recent research project is about “Cities Alive: Green Building Envelope Design”.
Jamil Corbani started his career in 1998, in the field of agriculture technology. In 2009, he co-founded Green Studios with Marc Abi Haila. Green Studios designs, manufactures, ships and supports hydroponic green walls and roof gardens installations all over the globe. Green Studios is headquartered in Beirut and its team is spread between Beirut, Dubai, Kuwait and Los Angeles. Owner of several patents and patent pending inventions related to hydroponic farming technology in Lebanon and the United States, in 2011, Green Studios was the winner of the MIT Enterprise Forum Competition of the pan-Arab region for its innovation in the field of green walls and roof gardens. In 2015 Dubai Municipality awarded the company for its achievements in the field of environmental technologies.
Helli Pangalou is the founder of elandscape-H. Pangalou & Associates (HPA), a landscape design firm based in Athens. The company´s work focuses on viable landscape processes connected to cultural and experiental effects. This includes public and private projects, ranging from large scale masterplanning to residential projects. HPA has participated in international architectural competitions and gained awards and citations. Helli Pangalou has edited books on landscape and published articles in several magazines. She has given lectures in Greek and European academic institutions and she has participated in international conferences.
Wolfgang Ansel is a biologist and the Director of the International Green Roof Association (IGRA). IGRA's targets include the worldwide promotion of the ecological Green Roof idea, an international knowledge transfer in the field of Green Roofs and the stimulation of international standards for good practices and reliable Green Roof technology. Wolfgang is coauthor of different Green Roof books and was a speaker at several Green Roof conferences. One of his main areas of work is implementing Green Roof policies on an international level. Together with the City of Portland (Environmental Services) and the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) IGRA has created a platform to facilitate the application of Green Roofs Policies, the "International Green Roof City Network".
