Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center - Metamorphoses of a Topos

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, includes the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera, as well as the creation of the 210,000 m² Stavros Niarchos Park, located on the edge of Faleron Bay in Athens, Greece. The starting point for the SNFCC’s landscape design is the architectural concept of creating a hill, which enhances a new relation between the city and the sea. A Mediterranean peak unfolds on the Park hill surface, with its own distinct ecology and structure. The Stavros Niarchos Park has been designed by Deborah Nevins and Associates, in collaboration with the local landscape architects H. Pangalou and Associates, with a sustainable approach, respecting the surrounding ecosystems and the landscape dynamics. It is a welcoming, open space that reflects the Mediterranean landscape. The realization of this vision includes both design and technical parameters such as the creation of a new topography, the construction of a "hill" with mild slopes for universal accessibility and open air activities, as well as the formation of a rich and sustainable ecosystem in accordance with the landscape ecology and water resources management. The SNFCC includes 25,568 m² green roofs of various types. The project was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification at the Platinum level, the first for a project of this scale and complexity in Europe. For the first time this project will be presented at an International Green Roof Conference. For more information please visit the website of the center:
