The 5th International Green Roof Congress will host important players involved in the promotion of Green Infrastructure through exceptional works of architectural achievement. Speakers will include for example Kai Uwe Bergmann from BIG - Bjarke Ingels Group (Copenhagen, New York, London), Deborah Nevins from Deborah Nevins & Associates (New York), Kyosuk Lee from MVRDV (Rotterdam, Shanghai), Helli Pangalou from elandscape-H. Pangalou and Associates (Greece), Jamil Corbani from GreenStudios (Beirut, Cairo, Dubai, Los Angeles) and Green Roof pioneer Roland Appl, president of the International Green Roof Association IGRA. Building from this foundation, a series of groundbreaking and inspiring projects for the sustainable development of future-oriented cities will be presented.

Al Shaheed Park, Kuwait City

Al Shaheed Park (http://alshaheedpark.com/) is the most significant Green Infrastructure project in Kuwait and, at the same time, one of the largest Green Roof projects in the world. The overall development of the park is taking place in four successive stages. The master plan combines cultural, social and environmental aspects perfectly. During the first construction phase (2013-2015) almost all buildings, including the 17.000 m² ceiling of the underground car park were fitted with roof greening. In total this is 35.000 m² of Green Roofs. In 2017 the second expansion “Phase II” was opened for the public, thus doubling the total Green Roof area of the park.

Seoullo 7017, Seoul, South Korea

A true plant village has been created on a former inner city highway in central Seoul. The ever-changing urban area has been transformed into a 983-metre long public park and is home to the largest variety of Korean plants in one place. 50 families of plants including trees, shrubs and flowers are displayed in 645 tree pots, and a total of approximately 228 species and sub-species have found their home in the park. 24,000 young plants (trees, shrubs and flowers) were planted in all, many of which will only grow to their final heights in the next decade.

Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC), Athens, Greece

The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, designed by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, includes the National Library of Greece, the Greek National Opera, as well as the creation of the 210,000 m² Stavros Niarchos Park, located on the edge of Faleron Bay in Athens, Greece. The “metamorphoses of a topos” has been designed by Deborah Nevins and Associates, in collaboration with the local landscape architects H. Pangalou and Associates, with a sustainable approach, respecting the surrounding ecosystems and the landscape dynamics. The SNFCC includes 25,568 m2 green roofs of various types. The project was awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification at the Platinum level, the first for a project of this scale and complexity in Europe.

Google Campus, London, UK

The design for the new Google Campus at King’s Cross in London is rooted in the local character of the area, taking advantage of the contextually defined building envelope while creating continuously cascading work environments that will connect Googlers across multiple floors. By opening up the ground floor and activating the roofscape, the light and airy workspaces are sandwiched between the terraced gardens on the roof - and market halls, auditoria and shops on the ground. Construction on the King’s Cross office will commence in 2018.

Excursion Al Shaheed Park

The pre-congress excursion will provide the delegates with a unique opportunity to experience the outstanding installations of the Al Shaheed Park, as well as allowing them to reap some insider knowledge from the developers and managers of the park.

Evening Reception

Al Shaheed Park is a different place after sunset. Spectacular lightshows and musical fountains create a very special atmosphere, which makes the park a perfect venue for the evening reception. Guests can continue their conversations of the day and make new contacts in a relaxed atmosphere.
